The power to give up isn't defeat. It is the only talent that lets you win without equipment.

Think back to the day you got a raise. How many days did that happiness last? If it vanished in three, then what you wanted wasn’t the amount of money. You aren’t unsatisfied because you are greedy; it’s because you’re looking on the wrong shelf.

“I want money” is almost always a mislabel. When broken down, it falls into three categories. First is security—this can be satisfied if you have skills that are valued anywhere. Second is freedom—this can be satisfied by lowering your desires and becoming lean. Third is influence—the desire to move people, to change the world to suit your tastes. This desire alone cannot be bought with money or skill; it can only be realized through things you have built outside of yourself.

Breaking down "I want money" into security, freedom, and influence

You won’t find which one is yours just by thinking about it. Instead, recall three events from the last few years that truly made you happy, and look at whether security, freedom, or influence was at play in each. When you line them up, the one that repeatedly appears will stand out. That alone changes your next move. Someone who wants security has no need to start a business, and someone who wants influence will never be satisfied by simply saving money.

Another important point is that the power to give up and the strength of one’s desire exist on different axes. There are combinations where the desire for consumption vanishes, yet the desire for influence remains. Not all desires diminish simultaneously. Which desire remains is not something you decide; it is something observed in your records.

And the power to give up is not defeat. Those who can shed their desires are sufficient without equipment—that is the only talent that allows you to win without equipment.

What you should look at is the desire that remains. The thing you cannot give up, no matter how many times you try to let it go—that becomes your path.
